Children and Young People
We like to think we are a child friendly church and we welcome children to all our activities, not as “tomorrow’s church” but as today’s church!
All our children and youth workers and helpers are DBS checked
Sundays at St. Mary’s
At the Later Service the children are with us for the first ten minutes and then go out to the New Room for their own activities. They join us again at the end of the service, sometime we get a treat and they will tell us what they have been doing at Junior Church. Each week the team will be using a programme called ENERGIZE. The sessions are age appropriate and include singing, activities, Bible study, crafts etc.
Infants and younger children
All children are welcome to stay in any of our services, if you would like an activity pack, please speak with someone at our welcoming table who will be able to help. You may also go to our New Room during the service, if you need a quieter spot.
All Age Services
These are normally held on the 4th Sunday of the month at the Later Morning Service. The service combines video clips, intereactive elements, a talk and food! It is not a children’s service, but an all age service so that the adults feel included! This service lasts about an hour and is followed by a buffet lunch. We also invite families to this who have recently had their children baptised, when they receive a candle, a certificate and are welcomed into the church family.
Children and Holy Communion
It is St Mary’s policy to admit children to communion along with their families, but we like them to have reached the age of seven and we have a short course which we would like them to do first, so that they appreciate something of the service.
Is your child musical and would they like to play at a church service? We encourage you to get in contact with us so that they can play in our Later Service or sing in the Parish Eucharist. We also have a Kidz Band that plays at special services.
Young Servers Team
We have currently two teams of servers who carry the processional cross, the acolyte candles, banners and assist at the altar. They serve at all age services and sometimes other services too.
CONNECT Youth Group
CONNECT meets each Friday at the Parish Hall from 6:15pm-7:30pm. This is a community youth group geared towards 9-13 year olds. Each week there are activities, games, talking and a tuck shop! Parents are welcome to stay for tea, coffee and a chat in the smaller room or can drop off and pick up at the end.
CONNECT also meet for special “one off ” events including, Movie Nights, Parish walks, picnics and BBQs. Stay up to date with these events by viewing our calendar or social media pages.
Messy Church takes place on the second Thursday of each month, except August. This is an after school activity for families, whose children must be accompanied, throughout, by an adult. It is held at the Methodist Church, and run by Churches Together in Portchester. There are games, crafts, a short, lively service and a cooked meal, finishing by six o’clock. The sessions are free, but donations towards the cost of food and activities are appreciated. To find out more about Messy Church, you can visit them at www.messychurch.org.uk.
